There is definitely potential in this both for businesses & individuals.  Great low cost housing that can be moved anywhere.

The company we received our refurbished sea container from is called "Big Steel Box".

I believe it is a Canadian company, and their web site is bigsteelbox.com.

I hope this information is useful.

How do you insulate those things?

@Neil McLeod You insulate as any other building, you can use wood or steel to form the cells for whatever insulation you use.  In addition, some places have used used Super Therm which is used on space ships.  In the mid 2000s a team of builders in Florida used Super Therm to insulate shipping containers that they turned into traditional looking buildings. To see it search Bob Villa shipping container homes.

Shipping container homes date back to the 1970's with some early ones being built in Canada and San Pedro, CA.  But it really took off in the last 10 years and examples of buildings are available all over the world ranging from Spartan to expensive.

Back in the mid 70's, I had a geology professor who somehow dragged, pulled or lifted an old railroad box car into the woods and converted it into a livable self-sustaining habitat....he installed solar panels, a well pump and a generator and a loft for a sleep area....was surprised at the amount of cubic footage....he had weekend parties and people loved the whole concept....he leased the parcel of one acre from a farmer so taxes were minimal...where there is a will, there is a way...wonder if it is still there...

Re-using "Sea Containers" is a very sensible idea.  We have just received a refurbished one at my place of work to use as extra storage to free up our workspace area.  These containers would be an excellant source of housing in places such as Haiti.  I worked for the United Nations in Haiti in 1996 and we made use of sea containers as a security wall around our compund, as well as for storage.  I flew all over the country (I was a Flight Engineer on Canadian military Bell212/Twin Hueys at the time) and there were disused sea containers everywhere.  Some were used by the Haitians as makeshift housing, but the majority were just sitting there rusting away.  It would be great if this idea was taken up by the U.N., or some other organization, as a solution to aid in the rebuilding of Haiti, as well as providing homes for the VERY many homeless Haitians that existed before the earthquake/sea containers would be very sensible for use as hurricane/earthquake resistant shelter.

@Steve Morden There are a lot of great designs that would be easily built in areas like you mention.

@Colin Barclay @Steve Morden Colin, I own a lot four (4) blocks from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. I want to build a three (3) story apartment building using shipping containers. I want to use solar panels and capture rain water for usage inside the units. Do you know anyone in Philadelphia that can help me?

Thanks for your response.

Mike, if this is in the Philly city limits, I would first see if the city "fathers" will issue a permit...being from PA I know they are "tax crazy" there"... City housing codes are nightmares...contact ship yard marinas and see what they cost...a well built affordable housing option would sell or lease like hot cakes...especially in a university area....you're on the right track...contact a construction company, solar panel people, etc....best of luck and keep us posted....Jim
